The fourth presentation at the 76th annual Amos Fortune Forum 2023 summer speaker series will feature photographer/writer Joan Brooks Baker and is titled “Through the Lens of My Camera: The Essence of Woman.”

The free presentation takes place in the Meetinghouse in Jaffrey Center on Friday, July 28, at 8 p.m.

Whether through her camera lens or her writing, Baker’s goal has been to explore life’s balance, particularly between the feminine and masculine energies. A focus of her search has been to look for the essence of woman, past and present, and how a woman honors life.

Baker was brought up in New York City, where she attended and received academic honors from New York University. She has lived in Santa Fe, N.M., since the early 1980s and has been involved with many Santa Fe entities. She has exhibited her photographs and photographic monoprints in galleries, mainly in Santa Fe and New York City.

Her memoir, “The Magnolia Code,” was published in 2020. It is a story of the mystery of belonging and the rules people adhere to or dismiss, with consequences for both. The book received the Distinguished Independent Press Award in the memoir genre and was a finalist in the Arizona/New Mexico 2020 memoir category. She is currently working on a collection of short stories titled “The Swampyland.”

This summer, the forum is providing space and seating on the Meetinghouse Common for attendees who would like to arrive early and bring a picnic. This space will be set up on Friday evening by 6:30 p.m.
