On Sunday July 9, at 11 a.m. the Monadnock Summer Lyceum presents Tom Frey, artistic director of Peterborough Players, who will share his vision of theater as an “empathetic machine.”
Peterborough Players, established in 1933 by Edith Bond Stearns, transformed an 18th-century barn into a 250-seat state theater, and Frey suggests theater should embrace the challenges of change.
Frey’s initial acting appearance was at Peterborough Players in 2010 before performing at the Cape Playhouse in Dennis, Mass., and on the New York City theater scene. One of seven children, he is the son of two music teachers, and once played Rolf in “The Sound of Music” while his mother portrayed the nun singing “Climb Every Mountain.”
The moderator for this event is Tori Haring-Smith, who taught English at Brown University, was artistic director of English theater in Cairo, Egypt, and for 12 years served as president of Washington & Jefferson College. More recently, after retiring in Peterborough, she has worked with Peterborough Players.
People can come at 10:30 a.m. for music from the Keene Chamber Orchestra Woodwind Quartet.
