PETERBOROUGHMulligan to speak on cellar holes

Adair Mulligan will present “A Walk Back in Time: The Secrets of Cellar Holes” at Peterborough Town Library, 2 Concord St., Wednesday, May 17, at 6:30 p.m.

The program was originally scheduled for April 19, but was postponed.

Abandoned cellar holes are common in New England. This program will explore the story to be discovered in what remains behind. Attendees can learn how one town has set out to create an inventory of its cellar holes, piecing together the clues in the landscape. Such a project can help landowners know what to do if they have archaeological sites on their land and help stimulate interest in a town’s future through its past.

Mulligan is author of “The Gunstock Parish: A History of Gilford, New Hampshire,” and is executive director of the Hanover Conservancy. She also served for 20 years as conservation director of the Connecticut River Joint Commissions.

This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Peterborough Library and by a grant from the New Hampshire Humanities. It is free and open to the public, and registration is not required.
