The Wilton Fire Department responded to two small fires on Sunday as a result of high winds bringing trees down on wires.
Fire Chief Don Nourse said crews first responded to a report of a tree on wires on Holt Road, where the tree had caught fire.
“The tree was leaning on the wires and burning,” Nourse said.
Holt Road was closed while the fire department worked with Eversource to extinguish the fire and repair the lines.
Later that afternoon, the department was sent out again for a fire related to wind bringing a tree down on wires. A dead tree fell on wires in the area of Forest Road and Curtis Farm Road at about 3:30 p.m., causing a telephone pole to break. Both electrical wires and Comcast wires were knocked to the ground, and the sparking from the electrical wire ignited a brush fire on the roadside.
Nourse said the fire was contained to about a 50-foot circle.
“The fire danger level is considered low right now, so luckily, that wasn’t a factor, but the wind was a challenge,” Nourse said.
Crews were able to get the fire under control within about 20 minutes, but roads remained closed for several hours while the wires and pole were repaired.
Forest Road was reopened at around 5 p.m., but Curtis Farm Road remained closed between Forest Road and Country Way while Eversource replaced the damaged pole.
