On Saturday, Oct. 15, at 9:45 a.m., Monadnock Writers’ Group is hosting its regional Three-Minute Fiction Slam at Peterborough Town Library, 2 Concord St.
The competition challenges writers to perform original pieces of fiction in three minutes or less before an audience and panel of judges. The regional event is part of an annual competition sponsored by the New Hampshire Writers’ Project. Prizes will be awarded to the top three winners. The first-place winner will advance to the state finals and a chance to win $250. It is free for spectators and participants.
This year’s judges for the Monadnock Writers’ Group event will be Emily Robins Sharpe and Linda Warren. Sharpe is an associate professor of English and affiliate faculty member of both women’s and gender studies and Holocaust and genocide studies at Keene State College. She also co-directs the archival project “Canada and the Spanish Civil War” and is the author of “Mosaic Fictions: Writing Identity in the Spanish Civil War.”
Warren is a romance novelist for Harlequin, past editor of The Worcester Review and poet. Her poems have been published in several journals and included in “Writing the Land: Maine,” published in 2022 by NatureCulture LLC. She resides in Princeton, Mass.
Since 1984 the Monadnock Writers’ Group (MWG) has supported local writers of all genres and levels of achievement. Monthly meetings, held on the third Saturday of each month, bring writers to the Monadnock region to offer their experiences. In addition, MWG publishes periodic anthologies and Smoky Quartz, a semi-annual online journal of literature and art. Throughout the year, MWG hosts public readings and informal gatherings to raise awareness of the literary talent in the Monadnock region. Learn more at monadnockwriters.org and the Smoky Quartz website, or send email to monadnockwriters@gmail.com.
