A recent letter (“An excellent order,” Chris Balch, Sept. 1) lauded President Joe Biden’s recent debt cancelation of student loans. Unless the president has a magic wand, he did not make these loans disappear. What he did is shift those obligations to the taxpayers. He increased the national debt, encouraged colleges to continue to inflate their tuition costs, sent a message to those of us who paid their loans that they were stupid and showed the next generation of citizens that a commitment to repay a loan is not really a commitment.
For those of us who pay our bills, this is an enormous insult. These people were not forced to take out these loans. They committed to repaying them. Why do the rest of us have to assume their obligations?
