On Sunday, Aug. 14, at 11 a.m., Maggie Fogarty will present “Human Rights Denied When Immigrant Justice is Delayed” for the Monadnock Summer Lyceum at Peterborough Unitarian Universalist Church, 25 Main St.
Starting from the notion that great nations are defined by how they treat their weakest inhabitants, she believes American policy must enact the country’s commitment to the dignity and rights of immigrants. As co-leader of the New Hampshire American Friends Service Committee, Fogarty shares a message of hope coupled with a call to action.
Fogarty worked several years in Bolivia and has a grounding in the Quaker ideals of preserving the essential dignity of man. She was a board member of the New Hampshire Concord Coalition to End Homelessness, served as a co-leader of the New Hampshire Immigrant Visitation Program and serves as a policy advocate. Her degrees in both history and religious studies continue to shape her views and motivate her work for an America that says, “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to be free” and really means it.
Moderating Sunday’s program will be George Bruno, a litigator for civil rights around the world. Bruno has lectured for the State Department on foreign policy. In 1971, he established the New Hampshire Legal Assistance and Public Defender program. He is an immigration lawyer in Manchester.
Music before the lecture features Jose Lezcano, a classical guitarist and teacher. The music begins at 10:30 a.m., followed by the presentation at 11.
People can watch the presentation in person at Peterborough Unitarian Universalist Church or the livestream at monadnocklyceum.org.
The Monadnock Fika Group sponsors the program.
