I saw the loveliest thing. I was headed west on Route 101, nearing Elm Street, when I noticed that an enormous eastbound semi had stopped on the highway, with maybe 10 cars back of it. The driver was smiling. In the field directly to my right was a year-old doe, waiting to cross 101. She saw that everyone had made a space for her and she leaped across the highway. Glory be! That’s who we are, folks who make room for the wild creatures of our land.

I’m only one of many here. Two weeks ago, I was headed east from Marlborough when I passed a 6-foot red-eared slider turtle trying to cross 101 on a very hot day. Turned the car around and found him or her again, and as the cars roared past, he was taken to the north side of the road and put down in a shady spot.

I know there are hundreds of other folks here who do the same. It kind of helps balance out the cruelty that gets thrown at us on our nightly newscasts.
