Summer Reading for all ages at Ingalls Memorial Library in Rindge begins Monday, June 20.
The library, located at 203 Main St., will host a kickoff on Tuesday, June 21, from 3 to 5 p.m. for people to register for the program, watch a puppet show by Nicol Wander, eat snacks, make a craft, sign up for a library card, showcase hula-hooping moves, play ocean-themed games learn about events this summer and more.
During the reading challenge, children can log their reading minutes to reach 1,000 minutes of reading, including listening to books. For every 100 minutes they read and every library event they attend, they will earn a raffle ticket, which can be used to try to win a prize of their choice. Along the way, readers will also win small prizes for their progress. Those who reach the 1,000-minute goal will receive a certificate, a free book of their choice and five extra raffle tickets. The winners of the raffle prizes will be determined at the finale on Aug. 16, which will also include campfire songs.
Other events include a pirate treasure hunt, weekly story times, Lego Club, a family game night, and weekly Craft Fridays when participants can come to the library to practice artistic creativity and make an ocean-themed craft.
Instead of logging minutes, teens will have a bingo challenge. They’ll win scratch tickets by registering, completing the challenge, reading books, writing book reviews or attending library programs. Some scratch tickets will be raffle tickets for the bigger prizes, but other scratch tickets might be surprise instant winners. Anyone who reads six or more books, completes the bingo challenge or both will win a free book of their choice as a completion prize, along with extra scratch tickets.
This year, the library is starting a new #Adulting program, designed to teach teens life skills which aren’t necessarily taught in the classroom. The teen summer program will start with a confidence workshop with author Maeve Ronan on June 28 at the Rindge Meeting House. Throughout the summer, the library will have #Adulting programs teaching life skills from how to sew a button on to how to search for scholarships and colleges.
