Two things. First, the United States is a democracy, not a theocracy. No matter what any religion’s views on issues such as abortion, contraception, when life begins and who should marry whom may be, a democratic government should ensure that all people of any religion or no religion have the right to choose the path they take in life. It’s called free will, something my own church is really big on.

Turning the U.S. government into a theocracy isn’t in the best interests of anyone except the minority of people who support passing laws that are favorable to their particular views of how we, as individuals, should be in the world. If you need a couple of examples of how dangerous this can be, look at Iran and Afghanistan, both theocracies ruled by religious zealots.

Second, isn’t it ironic that as some people in our government and society are pushing to limit women’s right to choose whether or not to carry a pregnancy to term, or potentially even whether or not to become pregnant, television and other media are filled with ads for treating men’s erectile dysfunction. More sex for men. More pressure on women to have sex. More babies for women, many of whom will be forced to support and raise those children on their own, without, presumably, the support of government programs that most men (and, sadly, women) on the right continue to oppose.

Sounds fair to me.
