The so-called “parental bill of rights” in the New Hampshire Legislature (H.B. 1431) specifically targets LGBTQ students by requiring that parents are notified immediately any time a student joins a club or sees a school counselor, and any time a school employee affirms a student whose gender is different from their sex assigned at birth.

Gay and trans kids deserve a safe, non-judgmental space, separate from their parents’ control. Young people know when their parents will support their sexuality and identity, and will share it with them when they are ready to do so. The government should not be forcing them out before that point. Doing so could put their very lives in danger if their parents are not accepting.
