ConValTheatre Arts premiered its first full-length musical since the COVID-19 lockdown, “Urinetown,” April 21, with further performances scheduled for April 22 and 23 at 7 p.m. at ConVal High School, 184 Hancock Road, Peterborough.
“Urinetown” is set in a dystopian future, where the rebel poor follow the leadership of Bobby Strong after a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20-year drought, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a single company that profits by charging admission.
The musical satire of the legal system, capitalism, social irresponsibility, populism, bureaucracy, corporate mismanagement, municipal politics and musical theater itself won three Tony Awards, three Outer Critics Circle Awards, two Lucille Lortel Awards and two Obie Awards.
ConVal High School Theatre Arts producer and English department leader Elizabeth Moore directed the show, with music direction from high school choir director and music teacher Brian Moore and choreography from 2018 ConVal alum and performing artist Eve Pierce.
