The third Shin Splints for Bryce 5K at Wellington Field in Rindge was the most-successful yet, raising a total of $10,300 for local nonprofits that provide addiction services.
The run is organized annually in the memory of Bryce Olson of Rindge, who died of an overdose in July of 2018. As he was training to run a 10K with his sister at the time of his passing, his family has decided to give back in his name through an annual road race. The proceeds from the race will be split evenly between Gates Recovery in New Ipswich, House of Hope in Keene and Reality Check in Jaffrey.
There were 79 registered runners on Saturday, each paying a $25 entrance fee, along with private donations to make up the total.
Elijah Bodanza, 13, of Hillsborough, was the first-place finisher, with a time of 18 minutes and 40 seconds. Tyler Damon, 21, was only a single second behind Bodanza for a second-place finish. Tiffany Seppala, 34, was the first woman to finish, and placed fifth overall.
