The Jaffrey-Rindge MLK Committee’s “Celebrating Martin Luther King Jr.” event will be livestreamed on its Facebook page, MLK Celebration Jaffrey-Rindge, in addition to the in-person event at The Park Theatre Monday, Jan. 17, from 5 to 6 p.m.
The theme this year is “Power to Heal.” James Waller, Cohen Professor of Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Keene State College, will deliver the keynote, “Power to Heal: Hope for America’s Deeply Divided Society.” Waller is a teacher and scholar in the field of conflict studies and resolution and an award-winning author. The talk will challenge people to recommit to King call to build a beloved community.
School district choruses will perform, and the Hutchinson Family Ensemble of Hancock will deliver abolitionist songs.
Two other events are planned as part of the week’s commemoration. Ingalls Memorial Library will present “Ashes to Ashes,” a 2019 short documentary focusing on one man’s journey of healing after surviving a lynching in 1967, followed by discussion, at the Rindge Recreation Department on Wellington Road Thursday, Jan. 13, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Historian Dan Billin will speak on “Abolitionists of Noyes Academy” in a live virtual event Wednesday, Jan. 19, from 7 to 8 p.m. The New Hampshire Humanities program is an exploration of the conflict over the opening of an integrated school in pre-Civil War Canaan. The event is free, but registration is required at MLK Celebration Jaffrey-Rindge on Facebook.
