Seeing an ad for holiday gift ideas in the Monadnock Ledger-Transcript for Jaffrey 250 years brought back a lot of memories.
Back in my college days, I dressed in old-time dress to fit into Jaffrey’s 200th anniversary the day of the parade. My boyfriend and his brother grew beards to fit with all the other Jaffrey men of town. There was a beard contest, and you joined if you were really a Jaffrey fellow. My friend’s brother had the biggest smile riding in a toy car. Another friend stepped on the gas and made his car be loud and so noticeable on Stratton Road. I’m glad he did not hurt anyone.
I never gave a thought to still being in the area coming on 50 years later. Wow! From racing around town for my exercise class to watching the train chugging through Jaffrey, there were never thoughts way down the road that I would still be nearby all these years later. Peterborough has been my home for many years, but Jaffrey calls with the Civic Center, summer Friday nights at Amos Fortune Forum in Jaffrey Center Meeting House, events at the Jaffrey Library, October Art Tour and trips to Kimball’s for ice cream.
There are times friends are missed and respected at Cournoyer Funeral Home. An uncle is buried in Conant Cemetery, so he gets a visit now and then. Lots of memories coming to the front from reading the ad. Thank you for fine thoughts originating almost 50 years ago. How many from 50 years ago will be at the 250th parade, I wonder.
