One person sustained a minor injury after two cars hit a moose on Route 202 in Peterborough Tuesday morning, according to Peterborough Police Chief Scott Guinard.

Guinard said Thomas Ball, 62, of Hancock, was traveling north when the moose ran out in front of him from the east side of the roadway and he struck the animal.

“The moose was then launched into the southbound lane,” Guinard said, at which point it was struck by a second vehicle, driven by Maria Distefano, 58, of Antrim.

Ball was uninjured, while Distefano received a “minor abrasion” to her face, according to Guinard, that was checked out by Peterborough EMS. Her car had to be towed from the scene due to heavy damage on the driver’s side, while Ball’s sustained only minor front-end damage.

The moose had two broken legs due to the collisions, in addition to internal damage, and it was determined that it could not be rehabilitated.

“Can only do the humane thing and put the moose down,” Guinard said.

According to Guinard, a Fish & Game officer provided a local hunter with a roadkill tag, and the hunter will process the meat.
