In honor of Veterans Day on Wednesday several towns in the Monadnock region plan to hold remembrances.
FRANCESTOWN
A socially distanced parade of veterans will assemble on the town common on Wednesday, Nov. 11 at 10:30 a.m. Veterans may wear uniforms if they fit, and all participants must be masked and socially distanced. The short parade concludes with a wreath laying, a three-firing salute and taps, followed by a raffle drawing for a custom quilt.
JAFFREY
John Humiston Post #11 American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #5613 and the town of Jaffrey invites citizens of Jaffrey and the surrounding towns to join in a remembrance on Wednesday, Nov. 11, to observe Veterans Day.
The parade of veterans will assemble at Jaffrey’s Blake Street parking lot at 10:15 a.m. and step off at 10:30 a.m., and march to the Town Common, where a prayer will be offered, a wreath laid, an address delivered by Jaffrey native and Vietnam veteran, Rick Lambert and the National Anthem will be played. Veterans Day is celebrated on Nov. 11 each year, a day when Armistice Day, as it was originally called, marked the end of the First World War at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918.
Today, Veterans Day honors all veterans of the armed forces who have served their country in time of need. A special invitation is extended to those veterans who have served, and those who are still serving their country, to march.
In Honor of Veterans Day, the Park Theatre in Jaffrey will present a double-feature of free online movies, both starting Wednesday, Nov. 11.
“Stalag 17” (1953) and “When Trumpets Fade” (1998) will be shown. Visit theparktheatre.wixsite.com/parkpixflix to access the films.
LYNDEBOROUGH
Veterans Day observances in Lyndeborough are set to be held Wednesday, Nov. 11 at Center Hall at 11:11 a.m.
Lyndeborough Town Administrator Russ Boland said the ceremony will be “very brief,” and will require mask-wearing and social distancing in deference to coronavirus restrictions.
The ceremony traditionally includes the town’s Lafayette Artillery giving a salute to the town’s veterans.
“It’s going to be brief compared to previous years,” Boland said, “but it’s such an important tradition that the town really felt it’s extremely important to do something as a remembrance, even if it has to be abbreviated this year.”
PETERBOROUGH
At 10:40 a.m., on Wednesday, Nov. 11, there will be a brief service on the Grove Street Bridge over the Nubanusit River next to the Peterborough Post Office.
The Peterborough American Legion Post 5 Cheney-Armstrong members will participate and Post Chaplain Andy Benoit will say a prayer.
Commander Wayne Thomas will read the names of the veterans from the area who died during the year. Vice Commander John Franklin will toss a bouquet of flowers into the river to honor those who have served. Members Gary Babcock, Brian Barden, and Wayne Thomas will fire a three-volley salute and SMS Band Director Ed Lowy will play taps.
Masks and safe distancing are required.
RINDGE
Rindge will hold its Veterans Day services on Wednesday, Nov. 11 at 10:45 a.m. at Cathedral of the Pines.
