New Ipswich police are seeking information about a white pickup truck that struck a parked car on Gibbs Avenue on Sunday night while doing burnouts on the road, and then fled the scene.

Police were called to Gibbs Avenue for a report of a hit-and-run at about 7:30 p.m., and are investigating and trying to identify the driver of the truck currently, New Ipswich police Lt. Michael Abel said Monday.

No one was injured, and the car, belonging to Hayes Pearson, 16, of New Ipswich, was unoccupied when it was struck, causing moderate damage to the vehicleโ€™s front end.

Hayesโ€™ mother, Amy Pearson, said her son was at a friendโ€™s house on Gibbs Avenue, when he heard the screeching tires of someone doing burnouts on the road. When he ran outside, he saw the truck lose control, and strike his 2008 Chrysler Sebring sedan. The truck did not stop, and left the scene.

Amy said her son is a new driver, and the vehicle is his first car.

โ€œItโ€™s sad, because he only had liability insurance. So unless someone comes forward and does the right thing, Hayes will be spending all the money he saved from working this summer to fix it,โ€ Amy said.

โ€œItโ€™s unfortunate that he did it and then just took off,โ€ Hayesโ€™ father, Paul Pearson said. โ€œItโ€™s unfortunate he didnโ€™t own up to his mistake. Things happen in life, but you have to own up to it, especially when you damage someone elseโ€™s stuff.โ€

Those who witnessed the crash described the vehicle as a white, full-size, single-cab pickup, possibly with damage from the crash. Amy posted details of the accident on social media, requesting anyone with information contact the police.

โ€œItโ€™s just scary because someone could have been in my sonโ€™s car,โ€ Amy said. โ€œThank God no one was. But to then drive off, not even knowing if anyone was hurt? People make mistakes, I know I had times when I have goofed around driving a car, it happens. So, just take ownership and do the right thing.โ€

Anyone with any information is requested to contact the New Ipswich Police Department at 878-2771.
