To the editor:
The New Ipswich Fire Department would like to thank the voters of New Ipswich for voting “yes” on article 9 for the purchase of new air packs (SCBAs). We have also applied for a federal grant that, if successful, will reimburse the town 95 percent of the cost of the purchase. There is no indication on when the money from the grant will be awarded or to whom but the grant officially closes this week so we will be watching it carefully.
Moving forward, we would also like to thank you for voting in the affirmative to make the annual contributions to the town’s capital reserve and expendable trust accounts. People have asked why the fire department protective equipment contribution increased. This is so that there will be money for replacement SCBAs in 15 years (the expected lifespan). SCBAs are a necessity for today’s fire service but they are also a huge expense. Putting money into the expendable trust gives us the money to purchase SCBAs in the future thus saving the taxpayers from another large warrant article.
