To the editor:
I expect that we will see a petition on the ballot in May for the town to fund and install four electric car charging stations at our Riverwalk parking lot. I endorse the charging stations.
I, however am against the charging station being free. There are plenty of charging stations within 20 miles of Peterborough. I doubt that an absence of a charging station keeps visitors from visiting Peterborough. But even if I am wrong about this, I don’t think the chargers really need to be free. There are plenty of “fee” chargers not far from Peterborough. They work well according to the users I have contacted. They also admitted to me that they visit Peterborough all the time.
In every case, the visitors admit to having more than 200 miles of range, so a lack of a charger in Peterborough is not a factor. If our chargers are free, I don’t expect to see the cars belonging to Peterborough residents with electric cars to be using the chargers when they live only miles away will I? They will be charging their cars at home of course. So if the chargers are installed and free to use, when I see Bill Kennedy, or Emily Manns cars at the chargers, you won’t mind if I take your picture and put it in the paper will you?
