Planning Board

(one three-year seat)

BETSY HARDWICK*

Years living in town:  59 (all my life)  I also have children and grandchildren living in town as well as many other relatives.

Previous or current elected office held: I am a current Planning Board member, and previously elected to the Board of Selectmen for two terms.

Other qualifications:

I know the town very well, and have been very involved in the community since a young age. I was on the Fire Dept. & Rescue Squad for a number of years. I am currently on the Conservation Commission and have been for the last 22 years, and I have also served on several town committees including: Highway Advisory, Highway Safety, FEMA Hazard Mitigation, Master Plan, Conservation Plan and Natural Resource Inventory. Over the last 20+ years I have attended numerous workshops and training programs on a variety of municipal and conservation related issues. I currently work at a small business in Antrim as office manager and have been there for over 20 years, and in the past have worked in the construction and landscaping industry.

What are two issues you think are important and how would you address them?

Finalizing the Master Plan and continuing to evaluate and update our zoning ordinances.

We are just about to begin a final section of the Plan on water resource management and protection. This is an important section and one where my knowledge and understanding of the water resources in town will be very helpful. After we finalize the last section of the Master Plan update we will do a careful review of our zoning ordinances to ensure they are in keeping with the goals and strategies of the plan, and also to make sure any references to maps or other items are correct. A copy of the Master Plan is available on the Planning Board page of the  town website (francestownnh.org) for more information on the specifics of the plan.

When reelected I will continue to carry out my duties as a member of the Planning Board in a reasonable and sensible manner. I will work hard to make sure that Francestown remains a good place for families and people of all ages and income levels to live, and that we retain our rural, small town character and quality of life while also moving forward into the future.

I hope my fellow Francestown voters will consider supporting me on March 10.

SARAH HIBBARD PYLE*

Years living in town: 29

Previous or current elected office held: Planning Board (almost 18 non-consecutive years)

Other qualifications: I have a strong knowledge of Francestown’s laws and procedures, and institutional knowledge of the work of the board.

What are two issues you think are important and how would you address them?

Two challenges facing our town that the planning board can help solve:

First, we need to work to expand access to high-speed internet and cellular service.  If Francestown wants to maintain our property values and attract young families to town, we need to bring these services to every home in Francestown. The planning board can and should support both public and private efforts to make that a reality.

Second, I believe that a vital village is important to our community. I would like to continue working on how to bring more small and in-home businesses to town, while maintaining its beauty and rural character. Creating opportunities for employment in Francestown benefits all of us and our zoning laws and regulations, if carefully considered, can help foster those opportunities.

MELISSA SHATTUCK

Years living in town: 5.

Previous or current elected office held: None.

Other qualifications: 30 years experience working in administration for a local/family paving company, experience in time management running a small business/farm Saving Grace Farm and a family of ten, people skills, volunteering with local church.

What are two issues you think are important and how would you address them?

I think it’s important to keep the elementary school here in town open. I think small town schools are important especially for people potentially looking to move here.

And also I offer a fresh perspective in a way to move forward as a community, balancing old and new. To put together a plan and move forward. Looking toward the future for our kids and what as a community and looking at the legacy that we as Francestown and leave for the next generation.
