A woman broke her ankle while hiking at Purgatory Falls in Lyndeborough on Tuesday afternoon, according to police.
The 65-year-old woman from Leominster, Massachusetts was hiking with a group of friends at the Lower Falls, and having passed the icy part of the trail, had removed her boot crampons, Police Chief Rance Deware said in an interview Wednesday. She slipped on a mossy rock and fell, breaking her ankle.
The woman was an experienced hiker and well-equipped for the Purgatory Falls hike, including proper boots, clothing and first aid kit Deware said. She was preparing for an overseas hiking trip.
“These things just sometimes happen,” Deware said.
The woman was carried from the Lower Falls approximately a mile and a half to the trailhead, where she was taken to St. Joseph’s hospital by Wilton Ambulance.
Lyndeborough Fire and Rescue, Lyndeborough Police Department and New Hampshire Fish and Game assisted with the rescue.
