It’s not too late to join the Junior Minstrels – and participate in “The Pirates of Penzanze” this spring.

While the first rehearsal in Hancock is Tuesday, March 3, first-come/first-served basis signups will be accepted until mid-March. Needed? Aristocrats, maidens, orphans, police – in addition to pirates – for this fun musical.

Unique in the region, the Junior Mints (as they’re popularly known) attract youngsters ages 7 to 15, with older singers encouraging the younger ones. Considered a “family,” members love to sing, work hard, and feel artistically powerful, especially as part of a group of young people who care about each other. Each spring’s musical becomes a visceral life milestone as the children grow up.

Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity for to sing and act with other talented youngsters – and a choral director, Jody Hill Simpson, who’s worked successfully with young people for decades. No wonder that she’s also a recent recipient of the prestigious Albert Nash Patterson award, recognizing individuals who have made exceptional contributions to choral music in New England. The Mints’ singing is ‘serious’ and has led to some truly peak experiences for members not only in the spring musicals – but sometimes in performances with the Boston Pops at Tanglewood.

“I am really hoping you will look around in your classrooms and circles of friends to identify a few more potential Junior Mints. I am always so amazed at this depth of connection and kindness within our Junior Minstrel ensembles,” Simpson said.

Tuition is $140 ($130 for two kids, $120 for three kids, and $110 for four). Scholarships are available for anyone who requests one.
