To the editor:
I attended Tuesday’s basketball game at ConVal. The high school band played at halftime and during timeouts.
I am writing to say: “Great job” to the band! Great sound, great spirit. Keep up the good work! Arts and humanities education is often regarded as a luxury or add-on in a culture that emphasizes science and technology.
In fact, reclaiming classical humanitarian values (goodness, truth, beauty) couldn’t be more important at the moment. Music education is one way to develop and cultivate more whole, healthy, creative people.
I urge our communities to continue to support arts and humanities education, both in our public schools and in civic organizations. And I look forward to hearing the band again, the next time I come to ConVal!
