A moose was killed on Route 31 in Lyndeborough New Year’s Eve when it was struck by a Jeep. The Wilton man driving the Jeep was uninjured.
On Tuesday, at around 4:57 p.m., a 2004 Jeep, driven by Christopher Cabral, 33, of Wilton, hit a bull moose crossing Route 31 near the Greenfield town line, Lyndeborough Police Chief Rance Deware said Thursday.
The moose weighed about 400 pounds, and was killed by the impact. Cabral was uninjured, but his Jeep had front-end damage and had to be towed from the scene.
“One of the antlers broke off in the front windshield, so it was lucky,” Deware said. “It could have easily gone through the windshield and caused injury.”
Adult male moose can become as large as 1,500 pounds, so based on its size the animal was about two years old, said Lyndeborough police officer Shawn MacFadzen, who also works for New Hampshire Fish and Game.
A resident of Greenfield claimed the animal for meat.
