To the editor:

When ousted as Secretary of the Navy, Richard Spencer wrote in his letter to Trump, “The Rule of Law is what sets us apart from our adversaries.” Unfortunately, the Rule of Law is hard to find in Trump’s administration.

As we devolve to the status of Banana Republic, the GOP serves as a vigilante lynch mob egging on the President rather than living up to their oaths of office to serve as a check and balance to Executive Branch actions. The Cult of Trump is undermining the truths Americans hold dear – we are all equal and have an unalienable Right to Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. Anyone undermining the laws and principles of our Government is abolishing our rights to safety and Happiness.

My ancestors fought in the American Revolution to overthrow a King who, to quote the Declaration of Independence, “refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.” They knew that a person “whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.”

When Richard Nixon assaulted the Rule of Law by firing a prosecutor investigating Watergate, he was thwarted in his effort to undermine democracy and held accountable by a bipartisan Congress, independent courts, and public outcry.

Today the actions of President Trump are far more damaging than those of Nixon, yet his followers turn a blind eye. The immediate responsibility of Congress is to hold Trump accountable and impartially conduct an impeachment trial. The time is long overdue for the GOP to put aside ideological talking points and king-worship to instead eradicate the rot in this Administration.
