A jackknifed tractor-trailer unit closed Route 101 down to a single lane Wednesday night.
On Wednesday at about 7 p.m., police responded to Route 101 at Old Mountain Road for a report of a westbound tractor-trailer that had slid into a jackknife and had come to rest blocking all but one lane of traffic, Peterborough Police Chief Scott Guinard said Thursday.
“It created a backup of traffic in both directions,” Guinard said.
The driver, Cedric Reynolds, 21, of Missouri, was not injured.
In the process of jack-knifing, both the tractor and trailer were damaged.
The road was closed for more than an hour while a heavy-duty tow truck came in from Milford to haul the truck.
The cause of the crash is not known, but Guinard said it was raining at the time of the crash, and is not unusual for a tractor-trailer, particularly when they are empty, to hydroplane while breaking, particularly on an incline.
The fire department was requested to assist police with directing traffic until the crash was cleared.
