Charges against a 17-year-old Conant student have been amended to attempted criminal threatening and attempted witness tampering.
The charges are in connection with an alleged threat issued by the student to another student or students.
The student’s name is not being released, as they are a juvenile.
Police originally filed juvenile petitions with the 8th Circuit Court charging the student with criminal threatening and witness tampering. Amended charges were filed Thursday, Jaffrey Police Chief William Oswalt said Thursday afternoon.
“The investigation was still ongoing, and information that was developed during the investigation showed that charges of ‘attempted’ would fit the elements of where we were at better,” Oswalt said.
The amended charges carry the same potential penalties as the previous charges, Oswalt said.
Police have been present at the high school this week as a precautionary measure, police said. During a School Board meeting Monday, Lt. Todd Muilenberg assured parents that at this point in the investigation, there is no indication the threat was made against the school or the student body as a whole, but to a specific individual.
