Branch River Theatre plans to present  “Lovers” at the Marlborough Community House starting Friday.

The play is written by Brian Friel is directed by Wendy Almeida.

Six performances are planned March 8, 9, 15, and 16 at 8 p.m. and March 10 and 17 at 2 p.m. All performances are being held in the Marlborough Community House.

“Lovers” is a story told in two parts: “Winners” and “Losers,” and takes place in 1966 Northern Ireland. In “Winners,” two commentators speak about the life and fate of young Mag and Joe, who are destined to be married in three weeks due to Mag’s pregnancy. The two young people are bursting with life, enthusiasm, and hope. Though their youth often leads to heated arguments, they soon dissipate through vows of love and carefree joking. What destiny lies ahead for such youthful passion?

“Losers,” on the other hand, tells the story of an older couple, Andy and Hanna, who are trapped in Hanna’s home by her invalid mother, Mrs. Wilson. Mrs. Wilson demands every moment of daughter’s time before and after they are married; continuing the intrusion into Hannah’s life thereby effectively ruining the couple’s relationship before it begins and after it has commenced…or does she?

“Winners” and “Losers,” in very different ways, both address love, what it means, and the choices we make when we fall deeply, desperately, into it.

The cast includes Chris Pratt, Carin Torp, Jacob Carroll, Anna Chassé, Kevin Colarusso, Heather McCormack, Mary Armstrong and Susan Sanders.

Tickets cost $15 for General Admission and $12 for seniors and students.
