A Milford boy scout has been awarded the rank of Eagle, after completing his Eagle Scout project in Lyndeborough.
Matt Deware, 17, of Milford, is the son of Lyndeborough’s police chief, Rance Deware, and when he was looking for a suitable project to fulfill the requirements of obtaining the Boy Scout’s highest rank, his father suggested building storage space for the town’s emergency management equipment.
“I know Lyndeborough is a small town, and I wanted to give back to their community,” Matt Deware said. “It’s something they can use far into the future.”
Deware got permission from the Lyndeborough Select Board in late 2017, and over the next year raised about $3,000 to cover the cost of materials to build a 12×12 foot storage shed at the Emergency Management Garage on Center Road to store safety items such as cones and barricades.
Deware said the project was a big learning experience for him.
“I don’t really know a lot about carpentry, so I had to find someone to help me,” he said. Lyndeborough resident and carpenter John Hyde provided him with the mentorship on the build. Deware said he’s much more confident about his carpentry skills after the experience.
Deware started in the Scouts as a first-grader, following in the footsteps of his father, who was also a Boy Scout. He said it was important to him to go to the top of the organization’s ranking system – which only about 4 percent of Scouts ever achieve.
“To me, it shows that I can be depended upon and can bring back to the community and help others,” Deware said.
Deware began construction of the shed in September, and completed it in November. On. Jan. 23, he was officially granted the rank of Eagle Scout, after a review of his project and qualifications.
There will be an Honor Court ceremony held in Deware’s honor this summer.
