ANTRIMHighway truck takes a spill

An Antrim Highway Department vehicle turned over and into Gregg Lake last week, causing a oil spill in the lake.

The town 2007 International truck was being driven by John Plourde, 24, Antrim police Sgt. Brian Lord said Saturday.

“Basically looks like the driver approached Gregg Lake Road Bridge and, not sure why it happened, but the dump truck over turned into the lake,” Lord said.

Antrim Fire Chief Marshall Gale said his crew responded Tuesday afternoon and was on site for six hours after the crash, attempting to mitigate about 20-25 gallons of diesel fuel, motor oil and hydraulic oil which has spilled into the pond.

Using booms, the fire department was able to contain the spill to a relatively small area, Gale said, and contacted the Department of Environmental Services and the National Response Corporation, which provides remediation services, was on site both Tuesday and Wednesday to clean up the spills with absorbent pads. Some of the vegetation that was impacted was removed.

“We got it contained in a small area, and it should be all mitigated at this time,” Gale said. “So it should not affect the water quality.”
