Bennington’s water commission has run totally dry.

Town Administrator Denise French said former commissioners David Desaulniers and Glenn Wilson both departed from their post in January. Desaulniers cited family and business matters, while Wilson pointed to frustration towards town officials as reasons for departing. French did not expand on the subject more than to say Wilson was frustrated. Wilson did not reply to a call from the Ledger-Transcript by deadline on Wednesday.

The two water commission vacancies were posted, and French said two people have placed their name on the ballot, which residents will vote on during its election day on Thursday.

John Spanos, a former member of the commission, left the position in March. French said he was a write-in member, but was never officially sworn into the position, meaning his tenure was technically never legitimate. Spanos also cited old age as a reason to relinquish the position for good.

The announcement was made too late to post the open position on the town ballot.

One of commissioners main duties is to authorize residents water bills, which are sent out quarterly. The last bills were sent out in October, and January’s have not been sent out yet. The next ones will be sent out in April.

“Hopefully we’ll get those out soon,” French said once those new members fill the positions.
