The Select Board will consider an article for Town Meeting that would discontinue a portion of a Class VI road.
Scout Road is one of the access points to Rose Mountain, which is conservation land.
Protecting Rose Mountain from vehicles is the main reason for the request to discontinue the road, said Sharon Akers, chair of the Conservation Commission Chair and Tom Jones, a land protection specialist with the Piscataquog Land Conservancy. Akers and Jones addressed the board during its Monday meeting.
“One issue many people had with Rose Mountain is the erosion on its trails at the summit,” said Jones.
Select Board member Fred Douglas, who hunts in the area, agreed with Jones. He said he has seen vehicles drive up Rose Mountain, despite postings declaring no motorized wheeled vehicles allowed.
He also noted that Scout Road has continually deteriorated. “At some points, [the road is] six feet below the original level. It’s incredible,” he said. “If we could keep large vehicles off the road, that would be great.”
If the town votes to discontinue Scout Road at the point where the Piscataquog Land Conservancy property begins, it would allow for the road to be closed off with a locked gate.
Akers presented the board with a potential draft warrant article, which would be voted on at Town Meeting in March.
The draft article would discontinue the portion of Scout Road within the Piscataquog Land Conservancy property boundaries. The board did not act on the article, saying they would like more time for discussion and to hear from abutters.
The board voted to adjust the charge for plowing the Lyndeborough Central School parking lot to a flat yearly fee of $2,280, based on a cost of approximately $120 to $150 per storm event, predicting 18 storms.
The board also reviewed but took no vote on a proposed warrant article for consideration at Town Meeting requesting $5,000 for a retaining wall for the cemetery.
The board unanimously agreed to post a No Trespassing sign at the town’s sand pit.
The board tabled a discussion on giving town employees time and a half during declared holidays.
