Hiker reunited with favorite poles

To the editor:

I hiked Bald Mountain on a recent Friday. Returning to the car, I opened up the hatch to load the dog, my pack and headed for home. Three days later on Monday, leaving for another hike, the hiking poles I always keep in the car were no where to be found!

I love those poles. They joined my hiking life this past year and I’m attached to them. Wracking my brain for the last time I saw them, I remembered it was Friday at Bald. The memory of them leaning against the side of my car made it certain that that’s where they were left. Regrets, and disbelieving thoughts followed as I wondered if they have been run over in the parking lot, or worse, taken. Hiking protocol is to leave found belongings at the trailhead. Holding that thought, I rekindled good feelings and drove to Willard Pond late Monday to have a look.

The parking lot was empty, but there they they were – leaning against the kiosk. My silver/ purple Leiki beauties waiting for me. Surprise, joy and gratitude, along with my continued belief in the honesty of people, made my day! I hope the doer of this good deed gets to read my words of appreciation.May you receive a good deed in return. Thank you for mine.
