PeterboroughCooking with fire

Learn to cook like our great-great-grandmothers at the Monadnock Center’s open hearth cooking workshop on Nov. 5.

Workshop participants will work together to prepare a meal typical of the 1830s over the open hearth in the center’s Phoenix Mill House. The workshop will explore historic recipes and cooking techniques through hands-on preparation under the guidance of experienced hearth cooks. Once the hard work is done, the group will enjoy the fruits of their labors and eat the meal they have prepared.

Participants will make hand churned butter; gourd soup with fried bread; pork, sage, and apple pie; and gingerbread cookies. Registrants will be sent a recipe for bread dough to prepare the day before the workshop for baking in the beehive oven. Hearth cooking is a strenuous activity involving bending, kneeling and lifting. All participants must be 18 or older.

The workshop is limited to six and requires registration. For more information call 924-3235.
