The Jaffrey Civic Center has received an $1,800 grant from The New Hampshire Charitable Foundation in support of its annual event, Celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr., which will be held on Martin Luther King Day, Monday, Jan. 16, 2017.
The purpose of the event is to bring people together to remember and find inspiration in the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on the occasion of the national holiday. To deepen our youth’s understanding of Dr. King and his values, the Civic Center works closely with the local schools and holds a cash-prize art contest in the fall leading up to Martin Luther King Day. All district high school students are eligible for the art contest, including home-schoolers and students in private schools and out-of-district placements.
This year’s celebration is titled “What is Courage,” and includes a high school poetry contest, a church ceremony at the United Church of Jaffrey featuring keynote speaker Alice Fogel, N.H.’s poet laureate, followed by a reception at the Civic Center. This event is free and open to the public.
