ConVal travels to Hollis-Brookline Saturday at 1 p.m. for a game with major playoff implications.
“This is the biggest game that ConVal football has played in a long time,” said Cougars head coach Paul Landau at practice Tuesday.
Both teams sit at 4-1. The team that wins on Saturday puts themselves in a great position for a playoff berth, though it’s arguably bigger for ConVal; the Cavaliers have three teams left on the schedule with a total of two wins between them, while the Cougars face St. Thomas (3-2 in the season’s final two games.
On paper, ConVal and Hollis-Brookline are quite similar. Both spread the offense out and boast a top-flight quarterback; H-B’s Joey Delaney (73-117, 62.4 percent, 1,243 yards, 17 TDs) and ConVal’s Dan Spezzaferri (68-109, 62.4 percent, 1,115 yards, 16 TDs) are the No. 1 and No. 2 QBs in Division II as of now.
Both have a pair of tough receivers. The Cavaliers lean on Matthew Simco, the division’s top receiver at 27 catches, 498 yards and five touchdowns.
“He’s a player we’ve got to stop if we want to win the game,” Landau said.
H-B also throws the ball quite a bit to Brian Delaney, out of the backfield or spread wide in trips formation; he’s tallied 21 receptions for 446 yards and a stunning ten TDs.
Those two sandwich CV’s Isaac Bacon (21 catches, 461 yards, 6 TDs) for the top three receiving spots in DII. ConVal’s Liam Baldwin isn’t far behind at 19 catches for 255 yards and five TDs.
“It’s going to be challenging for us,” Landau said.. “We’re going to have to trust our athleticism and trust guys to do their assignments for us to be able to have a chance against them.”
ConVal has won their past two meetings with Hollis-Brookline, something the Cavaliers haven’t forgotten leading into this game.
“They really want to beat us,” Landau said.
The coach and the Cougars both hope to see some fan support at one of the closest road games to ConVal this season.
“We’ve had an outstanding crowd so far this year,” Landau said. “I think we’ve had 1,000 people at every home game, or around that, so if we can get some of those awesome fans out to root for us and give us some support, that would be huge.”
