Cathedral of the Pines in Rindge will honor those who lost their lives in the Sept. 11 terrorist attack with two readings of their names.
The readings of the 2,977 names will occur at 8:45 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Cathedral, at 10 Hale Hill Road, on Sunday, and take about three hours each time. Additionally, the names of the five victims who perished as a result of the Boston Marathon Bombing and the 49 victims of the Orlando shooting will also be read.
“This is a very important event,” said Cathedral of the Pines Board of Trustees chair Donald Upton. “[The Cathedral] is such a beautiful place; I don’t know of many places more beautiful to hold an event such as this.”
The recorded reading of the names of the victims is read by actress Betsy Palmer, actor Jerry Orbach, Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon, Public Affairs Officer Alan Hicks at the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and volunteers at the New York unit of the Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic.
Additionally, several firefighters from New Ipswich will participate in the Fire Instructors and Officers Association of New Hampshire’s 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb this Sunday.
Fire Chief Meredith Lund and five other members of the department will participate in the event as a team by climbing the height of the World Trade Center – 110 stories – in full firefighter gear, to honor the 343 New York Fire Department firefighters who died that day.
The event will take place on Sunday at the Brady Sullivan Center in Manchester. Participants will climb the 20 story structure six times to complete the climb. Registration for the event will begin at 8 a.m. and the climb will begin at 9 a.m. and continue until 3 p.m. Participants can also register online at www.nh9-11stairclimb.org.
