Search complete, the town of Wilton has named its first-ever Town Administrator – Scott Butcher.

“Scott had some specific strong points,” said Select Board chair Kermit Williams in an interview on Monday. “He came across as organized, with experience in managing employees and planning.”

In March, the town voted to create a town administrator position, and approve up to $50,000 to cover salary and benefits for the position for the remainder of this year’s budget cycle. The position has a minimum salary of $66,500 and a maximum of $84,600 based on a 40-hour work week, excluding benefits.

Butcher has been hired at a starting salary of $75,000 and will begin his new role on Sept. 6.

Butcher was not hired under contract, but a contract will be discussed during this year’s crafting of the budget.

There are no plans to eliminate or reduce the two office administrators that currently do most of the day-to-day work in the Selectman’s office as a result of the new hire, said Williams.

Butcher, of Pepperell, Massachusetts, has a long management career in private business, and many years of involvement in Pepperell town government in various roles, including the Select Board and Board of Health, according to Williams.

This will be Butcher’s first municipal management role, however.

“This will be his first job as a town administrator, but the Select Board is confident that he is the right choice for Wilton,” said Williams.
