Football. Popsicles. Cool new friends. New ConVal middle school football coach Abe Ewing is offering all that and more at Wednesday Night Win Night, once a week at the ConVal practice field.
“Wednesday Night Win Night is envisioned as a place where kids can bring a buddy, bring a friend,” Ewing said. “We’re just making it a fun place where kids can come and learn about the game of football, and hopefully meet potential teammates and players.”
One of those players is Reid Wilson, a rising 8th-graderwho’s been all-in this offseason. Wilson and his teammates welcome all newcomers with open arms.
“We just kind of have fun and meet new people,” Wilson said of Win Night. “There’s a ton of new people that are coming, and I think it’s super awesome because they’re all super nice and I think they’ll be good for the team. It’s really fun.”
At Win Night, which is every Wednesday from 5-6:30 p.m., kids gather and play a variety of games, like Deer Hunter (kids with wiffle balls chasing each other around), or the Win Night take on the American Gladiators game Powerball. One of Wilson’s favorites is Ultimate Football, which — well, let him explain it.
“You know Ultimate Frisbee? It’s like that, but with a football that we made out of styrofoam,” Wilson said.
The goal — beyond having a good time and eating popsicles, is to grow the middle school football team to the point where they can field a varsity and a junior varsity team. That will improve practices and increase playing time.
“The next step for our program is to have two teams,” Ewing said. “That will increase everyone’s playing time drastically.”
