While the Attorney General’s office said it completed its investigation of the shooting death of Lane Lesko Friday, it has yet to release any information on the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Senior Assistant Attorney General Jeff Strelzin said the investigation was concluded last week, almost a month after the incident on Route 136 in Peterborough.
“We expect our decision to be announced very soon,” he said.
The U.S. Department of Justice recommends releasing officer names within the first 72 hours after a shooting. At 10:23 a.m., Tuesday, July 19, Lesko will have been dead for 28 days, or 196 hours.
The day after the shooting, an autopsy report concluded that he was killed by a single gunshot wound, calling the incident a homicide.
That June 22 report from the medical examiner is most recent release made by the attorney general regarding the shooting.
According to Strelzin, the attorney general can rule any of four ways after the investigation is complete: that the shooting was legally justified, that it was not but the officer will not be charged anyway, that it was not and the officer will be charged, or that it cannot be determined.
If the shooting is ruled justified or otherwise with no charges issued, the report will likely contain a detailed account of the shooting and what led to it.
