Independent Bookstore Day marks its second year of celebrating independent bookstores nationwide on Saturday, April 30, with literary parties around the country.
The Toadstool Bookshops of Peterborough, Keene, and Milford will be celebrating the day by donating 10 percent of the sales in Keene and Peterborough to Monadnock Buy Local to further that organization’s work in spreading the word about the social and economic benefits of patronizing locally owned businesses.
In Milford 10 percent of the sales will be donated to SHARE, a nonprofit outreach program which provides food, clothing, and emergency financial assistance to those in need in Milford, Amherst, Mont Vernon, and Brookline.
There will be a gathering of poets and a raffle in Keene, and treats offered in all three stores.
The stores will also offer exclusive day-of merchandise created especially for Independent Bookstore Day by major publishers and authors. Since its inception in 2014, more than 120 authors have demonstrated their support for independent bookstores by donating work for Bookstore Day.
Items include books, prints, and other items for children and adults. These items will be available only at participating bookstores on Saturday.
This year, stores will also feature a selection of free items from Brandon Sanderson and Terry Tempest Williams.
