The Jaffrey Fire Department is one step closer to receiving almost $20,000 in radio equipment, after the Select Board agreed to the terms of a grant proposal.

Fire Chief David Chamberlain explained to the board that even though the Emergency Management Performance Grant was a matching grant of $38,944, the town has already paid its half by investing money into the department’s rescue truck. The grant would be for a mobile vehicle repeater and three mobile radios.

“This will allow us to communicate with other towns and places like Millipore in case of an emergency,” said Chamberlain, who said a UHF and low band radio would be installed.

With the board approving the grant’s terms, it will now go to final approval through the NH Department of Safety.

On the heels of the revival of the Festival of Fireworks, the Select Board approved a new ordinance addressing special event permits in town.

The ordinance, approved Monday, sets forth guidelines for the timeline in which the town should be alerted, what paperwork should be filed, and the approval process for such special events.

“This policy is directed at events in town that will draw more than 100 people,” said Town Manager Dave Caron. “We don’t want to be over regulatory, but we do want to have some guidelines in place.”

The board agreed unanimously to approve the ordinance, with only minor wording changes noted.

An agreement was struck between the town and nearby Franklin Pierce University. Partnering with the town, the university will offer a some free courses to town employees who wish to further their education.

The board also accepted a $400 donation from the Monadnock Quaker Meeting Religious Society of Friends as a payment in lieu of taxes.
