Jaffrey Public Library capped off its summer learning program on Friday with a demonstration on the properties of nitrogen – including how it can be used to make ice cream – on the library lawn.
Through a grant provided by MilliporeSigma, the library’s learning program this year, “Dig Deeper,” explored several scientific concepts and how they apply to real life. On Friday, Sub Zero Nitrogen Ice Cream of Nashua gave a presentation on nitrogen and its effects – using a balloon to show how air compresses when it’s cold, and that the cold steam from boiling nitrogen will still make a teakettle whistle from the air pressure, for example – before making ice cream for children to try.
