Are you shocked that New Hampshire electricity rates just doubled? When you understand the relationships between billionaires, politics, utilities and consumers, you will make an appointment to vote for Democrats Nov. 8.

You may even volunteer your time to ensure a favorable outcome. Consider this — the International Energy Agency, created in 1974 to ensure the security of oil supplies, has declared that solar power, which has zero carbon emissions, is now the cheapest source of electricity in human history: not nuclear, not coal, not oil, not natural gas.

Fossil fuels, which are controlled by international markets, are no longer cost competitive with solar, and it would be madness to continue their use. Solar power innovation has dropped in cost 99 percent since 1975 and these costs are still falling. So, even if one disregards the environmental and health costs of burning fossil fuel for energy production, solar is way out ahead.

So why is New Hampshire so far behind our neighboring states in the adoption of time-proven technology that can reduce our energy costs now and continue to lower them for decades? We don’t illuminate our homes with whale oil or use bedpans and outhouses anymore, so one must wonder why we don’t transition to modern, less-expensive technology that has a huge environmental upside.

The short answer is that New Hampshire has been colonized by Koch Industries of Kansas, and our governor’s political ambitions and family stock portfolio make us maximally dependent on legacy fossil fuels. Just look at the postcards in your mailbox that make Democrats look like they are from The Addams Family; they are paid for by Charles Koch.

Vote for Tom Sherman for governor and Democrats down the ballot.
