Peterborough Town Library and Friends of the Library will present “The Old Man: His Life and Legacy” with Inez McDermott on Thursday, Sept. 26, at 6:30 p.m. The program will be held at the Peterborough Town Library, 2 Concord St.
The presentation will explore the history and significance of the Old Man of the Mountain, which collapsed on May 3, 2003. McDermott will discuss how public perceptions of the Old Man shaped New Hampshire’s identity, both symbolically and physically. The program will cover the efforts of those who worked to preserve the Old Man, from mountaineers and engineers to schoolchildren who contributed to the cause.
Participants are encouraged to share their own stories and reflections on this symbol. The discussion will include why these granite ledges have had such a significant impact on many people.
McDermott has been teaching art history and curating exhibitions in New Hampshire since 1986, focusing on the role of art in social engagement and activism. Her research includes historical and contemporary New Hampshire art, particularly 19th-century photography.
This event is free and open to the public. No registration is required. The program is sponsored by the Friends of the Peterborough Library and supported by a grant from NH Humanities.
