Current political dialogue tries to portray “socialism” as some kind of evil extreme. Don’t fall for it. Socialism merely tempers capitalism – it doesn’t replace it. “Socialism” is not a dirty word.

In America, “socialism” refers to policies that provide safety nets, that protect national resources from private exploitation (like national forests and parks), and that tries to balance power among all of our citizens (the heart of a democracy). In contrast to its weaponized connotations, Americans embrace socialist choices every day. Medicare is a very popular program. Social Security is very popular, as well. These are examples of American “socialism.” Unemployment insurance, workers’ compensation, and free public education fall under the label of “socialism. ” Military service is a form of socialism as individuals make sacrifices for the communal good of the entire country. Patriotism itself is a form of socialism as it places loyalty, support and sacrifice above any profit motive. Indeed, “socialism”, far from being a dirty word, is the glue that holds a community and a nation together.

In this election cycle, don’t be afraid of “socialism.” Don’t let it’s misuse blind you to the underlying issues of the day. We need its “social glue” more now than ever.
