The Mascenic softball team dropped their first two games of the season last week. On Wednesday, Campbell scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull off a come-from-behind 2-1 win. Maddie Labrie had 10 Ks in the loss and drove in Casey Wayrynen for Mascenic’s only run.
On Thursday, the Vikings got back on track against Newport with an 8-4 win. Labrie struck out eight and went 2-3 at the plate. Sam Bilodeau was 3-4 with a triple and an RBI, and Michelle Paradise went 1-2 with three RBI.
Then, on Saturday, Mascenic hosted Pelham for a makeup game, with beautiful, sunny conditions. After the Pythons plated one in the second to take the lead, Mascenic was in position to even the score in the bottom half. Labrie singled, stole second and took third on a wild pitch, but Jordyn Babin was called out at first on a bang-bang play that would have driven in one, and Pelham stayed on top.
The Pythons added one more in the sixth, when a high pop fly to right got caught in a gust of wind, pushed back into the infield, and landed on the dirt between three Vikings, scoring one. Mascenic huddled before their last ups, down 2-0.
“We can break their hearts here, girls,” urged coach Dutch Stauffeneker. “Go out and break their hearts.”
Mascenic went down 1-2-3 in the seventh to end the game.
The Vikings (8-2) were set to face Wilton-Lyndeborough (7-4) on Monday after press time. Look for coverage of that game in Thursday’s Ledger-Transcript. Mascenic hosts Conant on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
