A brush fire scorched about two acres of land near Page Road on Friday afternoon.
The land was mostly open field, although some of the flames spread to a small section of wooded areas before crews were able to extinguish the blaze. No structures were involved in the fire, and there were no injuries.
Dublin and Jaffrey Fire Departments both responded to the call. Jaffrey Fire Chief David Chamberlain said the house was located in Dublin, although the sweeping property stretched into Jaffrey. The fire occurred on property in Jaffrey.
Dublin Fire Chief Tom Vanderbilt said the homeowners were responsible for lighting the brush fire that raged beyond their control. It took the two departments more than two hours to extinguish the fire.
The state requires individuals to obtain a fire permit from a local department before a fire is started. The Page Road property owners did not have a permit to burn brush on Friday.
“It was definitely not conditions to be burning in,” Vanderbilt said about the incident.
The homeowners will not be fined, but they will have to cover the cost of extinguishing the fire. Chamberlain said it’s unclear how much that will cost at this time, but said it would likely be between somewhere in the neighborhood of $500 and $1,000.
Vanderbilt said fire conditions are moderate right now. He said the ground is wet deep down, so fires aren’t burning deep, but the flames are spreading fast.
A brush fire also broke loose near 521 Townsend Road in Mason on Saturday.
Mason Fire Chief Fred Greenwood said crews were dispatched at about 4:22 p.m.
It’s unclear how the fire started, and the department is still looking into a cause. Crews were dispatched from a number of towns in the region.
Wind played a major factor in the fire that spread about a quarter of an acre. Greenwood said dead, dried out wood from a past ice storm caught fire and made the blaze intense at some times. It took about two hours for crews to extinguish the fire.
