Governor Chris Sununu visited Peterborough Friday, where he met with about a dozen state and local officials to discuss Peterborough and Jaffrey’s joint water project. The $12.8 million project, which will increase water supply for Jaffrey and Peterborough by an estimated 200,000-500,000 gallons of water per day, is approaching full funding through a combination of bonds from both towns and grant money, including a $1 million grant recently secured by Jaffrey.
Sununu said the fundraising was the easy part; the hard part, he said, was getting state leadership on board for the project and creating a public/private partnership with companies like MilliporeSigma, which hopes to add hundreds of new jobs with the expansion capacity the water project would allow.
“This is a really big deal,” Sununu said. “What you’re going to do for this community is unbelievable. And it’s not just Peterborough, it’s the surrounding towns, the surrounding businesses – everyone gets to benefit from this instead of having that anxiety, that worry for years about how we’re going to solve this potential crisis.
Following the discussion, Sununu toured Peterborough’s Main Street Bridge project, which is scheduled to be completed by next summer.
